National Apprenticeship Week 2017

This week marks the 10th annual National Apprenticeship Week in the UK.

The water industry is fully committed to the training and career development of apprentices as part of its work to deliver its commitments to its customers and the environment, now and for the future.

Water companies provide a wide range of opportunities for hundreds of ambitious and talented young people within their regions to learn and achieve success. Many of the roles are in engineering, where the apprenticeship programmes develop the skills to ensure we maintain the very best quality water to drink and that our wastewater is taken away safely and treated to the best standards.

Apprenticeships are vital to the UK economy. The energy and utilities sector alone employs around half a million people, but requires 221,000 new recruits over the next 10 years. Through the Energy & Utilities Skills Partnership, sector employers are collaborating to promote an agile workforce by sharing best practice that drives the development of skills to deliver sustainable opportunities.

The demand for skilled workers is increasing, and with 20% of the entire energy and utilities sector workforce due to retire in the next ten years, it is vital that the water industry delivers strong apprenticeship programmes to secure the resilience of the sector.
